Apologies if I have this wrong, but I saw in some documentation that live chat and DMs are synced? If we switched DMs off , does that mean we could not enable live chat?

When you say live chat - I want to confirm - are you referring to this? Live Event Chat
I may be wrong - but I believe they are separate as the Live Chat feature I linked to above is dependent on utilizing status messages while the dms are "Conversations".
Here is our internal STAGE site - where we have disabled dms (admin --> membership--> membership options) - we still were able to utilize a live event chat.
I believe from speaking with Jon, that is separate from the live chat plugin (hence the slight name difference). I think live chat requires 'Enable conversations' to be checked in membership options, and this thread ( RE: Private Message Function ) suggests DMs need it as well.
I believe DM's are solely tied to conversations - so yes - if you disable dm's - conversations would also be disabled. But live event chat is dependent on status messages - so I believe you could disable dm's - and still use live event chat. Myself and John even tested in our internal STAGE site and we were able to do so
Yep got that, but I don't think live event chat meets our requirements. It is the separate Live chat plugin we are looking at.

I understand now - then I do believe you may be correct in stating they are connected.
