Notification about comments on blogs where the user is subscribed to the application?

Alex Nassi , we were just going over this. The way you have described it working is our understanding as well.

We recently looked into a solution for when Blog posts are used as a way for a third-party system to post outage updates. For example

• A company's main network is down, and a system account posts a blog post that there's an outage => Blog subscribers get this notification
• Status of the outage is updated in the comments => Blog subscribers do not get this notification unless they turn on notifications

Realize it's an edge case, but we're trying so solution a way to enable comment notifications for all subscribers on a blog-by-blog basis. As you've stated, there is not a global setting and also not currently a way (that we know of) to tie Blog notifications and Blog Comment notifications together.

Alex Nassi  We have also confirmed that what you are describing for blog comment notifications  is as designed. We would also love to have a way for blog subscribers to receive comment notifications without an additional action on their part to turn the comments on. Our use case is outlined by John Reynolds in his comment to this post. 

I was just looking deeper into this today when ironically this post came in.  I have a quick related question.  Inside a Blog I see this option if I am not logged in.

It allows you to enter any email address, so you don't have to be a registered member.  If you are logged in this is replaced with turn Blog notifications on.  How do non-registered users unsubscribe later? If you enter an email address to subscribe that is not associated to a member, and then they later register, is this converted to having Blog notifications on for their account or is there a seperate subscription entry for just their email address that they would have to unsubscribe from?

In the email that is sent, the unsubscribe link in the footer (present by default) allows the user (authenticated or not) to unsubscribe.

It does not appear that the subscription is migrated if the user creates an account with the same email address, though, they could still unsubscribe via the link in the email (if they receive multiple).

Great use case John Reynolds , we have a similar one as well. With yours and Tammy Eck 's confirmation, I created  Add ability for users to be notified on all comments on a blog application .

I haven't tested it, but I took a quick look at Snippets and may look at adding some type of standardized call-to-action ("To be notified of any comments on this post, click the "Turn Comment Notifications On" button to the right") that can be used on all posts.

Most users won't save the initial email after getting setup.  If users sign up with just their email address, after they delete the initial email that has the unsubscribe link, is there any other way for them to unsubscribe?  

Yes, every email sent will have an unsubscribe link in the footer. It's not only included in the first email.
