Direct message bug?

I just chatted DM with a member here without being 'technically' a friend. That is strange because the default is DM only with friends. Now, in this community everybody knows each other pretty much so no harm done.

So I tested it out on my local machine and indeed I can DM with a person without a friendship while both our profiles have "Only friends" as default.

Me thinks this may be a bug or am I missing something? Never too old to learn!

  • Hi

It's possible that this setting is configured at the site level by the admins, but individual users can override it in their own settings.

To check this, go to your avatar → Settings, then scroll down to the messaging permissions section — you'll see an option allowing users to receive DMs from non-friends if they've enabled it.

Additionally, admins can override this on a per-member basis via the admin panel:
Admin → Membership → Members → [Select Member] → Settings tab.

So, what you're seeing might not be a bug — just a case where either you or the other user have that setting adjusted.

  • Ik know. I tested in one of my environments. The default there was Friends Only. Also the recipient had: Friends Only, Yet, I was able to message this person without being a friend. Lemme double check that. Imho if a member has set "Friends Only"  then none other than an admin should be able to do that. Speaking of which...that may just be the clue I was looking for...:-)
