Unverified users showing as verified and inflating figures

I don't get this. If someone registers but doesn't compete their registration due to using a fake or incorrect email address, the user still appears in the  membership database and in reporting as an authorised account.. I tested this by registering a number of fake accounts which can't log in (because they didn't complete the email registration process) but they all show at the back end as new members in the community. This is artificially inflating the number of actual active users and the number of new members is actually incorrect as these people are not members and may never become members

Also the these non verfied users appear in search and it is possible to send them friend requests and tag them in posts. It looks like more people have joined than actually have because these users never completed the sign up process. Surely this cant be right? Why aren't they showing as pending instead of authorised?

  • even so that doesn't help. They still all show as new members even though they may never go on to verify their accounts. This artificially inflates the membership count. They are still listed in the reporting and membership databases as new members. The only reason i know that they aren't really members is because i set up the fake accounts myself. This makes no sense. what if they used a fake or incorrect email address and therefore never verify and then sign up again with a different email address, I will then have two new members showing when in fact I only have one

  • I have logged a bug to consider new user accounts with unverified email addresses as inactive accounts (with respect to search, member counts, etc):

TE-17798: New user accounts with unverified email addresses (when email verification is enabled) should not be considered active accounts.
