Custom profile field types

Question

We have a plugin that registered custom field types in cs_Profile_FieldTypes, appreciate this cannot be supported anymore, so how do you register custom field types now?

I have filed TE-19697 as a feature request, but this would not be a 14.0 item and would be potentially prioritized for a future release. It would also be helpful to understand why this is needed along with a detailed example that can be added to that story.

Custom profile field types was never an extensibility point, it continues to be that way in 14.
