Text Repetition when will this actually trigger?

Hello,

Our community got spammed two weeks ago; most of the posts contained repetitive text, such as "call this number," "how to contact," and " Premium Games," several times in the post.

The Text Repetition option settings were disabled. We believe that if we had turned on this, it would have helped to auto-moderate this type of post.

However, going over the documentation (or lack of it), it seems that this would only work if the spammers had posted it across different threads rather than in a single thread.

Does anyone know what scenarios Text Repetition would trigger? Does anyone have this implemented in their community?

Regards,

  • Hi

The Text Repetition feature you mentioned is indeed designed to help identify and moderate spam by detecting excessive repetition of text.

Here's a brief overview of how it typically works:

    1. Minimum Number of Words in a Repeated Phrase: This setting determines how many words need to be repeated for the system to flag the content. For example, if set to 3, the feature will look for phrases with at least 3 repeated words.

    2. Minimum Number of Repetitions: This is the threshold for how many times a phrase needs to be repeated. If set to 3, the system will only flag a post if the repeated phrase appears at least 3 times. This is where I am not sure if the reptitions looks at one piece of content or the whole community.

    3. Minimum Content Percentage of Repeated Words: This setting indicates the proportion of the total text that must consist of the repeated phrase for the content to be considered abusive. For example, if set to 34%, and the phrase makes up more than 34% of the post, it will be flagged.

Given your situation, if users are posting within a single thread, the Text Repetition feature might not trigger if the repetition occurs within a single post or thread rather than across multiple threads. It is generally more effective in identifying spam when the repetition is spread out over several threads or posts.

To enhance moderation, you might consider combining this feature with other spam detection methods, such as keyword filtering. Additionally, reviewing and possibly updating your community’s spam management policies and settings could help mitigate such issues in the future.

  • Hello Sara,

Thank you for taking the time to confirm that this feature would not have helped us stop the spamming.

We have implemented all the other features.
