Direct messaging appears to be one way when you permit messages?

This appears to be something that is completely overlooked.

If I have my settings to "Allow Private Messages from" and then "Everyone" that appears to allow people to message me, but if they do not have the same setting, and we're not friends, then as a user I cannot message them back.

It is entirely one way?

This means that if someone messages me, they're not notified that I cannot message them back, I then cannot reply to them, I have to know that I go to their profile and click 'connect' and add as a friend or follow and somehow determine that should be my next action.

This is not a good user journey.

When I set 'Allow private messages from anyone' that tells me that I should also be able to reply to their messages, too, regardless of their setting - they have reached out with a message which should set a temporary 'allow' for that message thread for a back and forth.

But it doesn't? Unless you're an administrator?

Am I missing something here? This is frustrating our users and impeding messaging between them.

  • I haven't tested this or come across this before, but this is a really good find, ! We don't get a lot of message activity on our site, but this is good to know as we're going to be working on adding some more "networking" type pushes on our site where this could become an issue.

As a workaround, if you want a suggestion, maybe you can just add a Generic Content widget above the Conversations widget with some message like "Please note: some community members require becoming friends with the other member before you can message each other, please do {XYZ} to become friends with this member"

  • Hey Alex, thanks for your reply and good suggestion within our means.

"Please note: some community members require becoming friends with the other member before you can message each other, please do {XYZ} to become friends with this member"

This would be a good step towards an out of the box solution that was able to dynamically check if the person is already friends with the other member that's mentioned in the 'to' field and to then populate with a link to the users profile or a link to connect with the other user(s).

User's are going to expect that if they are able to send a direct message to another person that it's going to be able to receive a reply and it'll "just work", unfortunately no amount of messaging on the page resolves this easily when you're working with a public facing, multilingual community.
