Way to limit Private messages to a user's role

Hi Mihir, first of all, I like the idea you described.

This is not possible with out of the box fucntionality and roles/permissions at the moment unfortunately.
With custom development this is possible to achieve. The conversations widgets will have to be customized to achieve it.

You really can't achieve this with custom work becasue you would only be limiting at the UI level, meaning any other API call would not be subject to this.   Right you simply have the options to turn off conversations globally, or limit whom can message you in your uiser settings.

Few - only admins- have API access enabled. So this might work actually. Thinking of re-purposing the user setting that enables PMs from "Everyone" to mean only allowing it from members from the groups the user belongs to. 

That is not really how the setting works, it drives whom they can communicate based on individuals or friends, not groups or permissions.  So while yes you can alter the UI, you would also have to define that setting on EVERY user to allow from anyone before you could restrict it in a UI, otherwise you will say they can start a conversation with a group memebr, but their own settings could say no, and that cannot be altered.   You also have to find and update everywhere in the UI where a conversation can be started.
