Reporting Anomalies

Hi all,

We are experiencing some anomalies regarding Viewed Content reporting, as we are getting very high numbers of views.

1) First let's look at the evolution starting from December 2021 to February 2023:

As you can see, the unusually high numbers come from December 2022 onwards.

2) If we zoom into December 2022, there are more anomalies to be seen:

3) Also, if we sort by the highest values for the View Count, some posts have way too many views, and here's an example from January 2023:

Does anyone have a reasonable explanation for these anomalies? Can it be a bug, or we're dealing with data scraping/bot activity?

Does anyone else encounter a similar or the same issue?

We would greatly appreciate it if someone could help us understand these very high numbers.

Thank you!

Adrian

  • or we're dealing with data scraping/bot activity?

This is likely if your community is publicly accessible.

We've discovered that our Verint instance can heavily be the focus of bots and bad-actor traffic, attempting to bring the site down, but also heavily view pages.

Part of this has been discovered that the URLs are scraped from social media advertising, and then hit heavily by international, or country specific, botnet traffic.

    This inflates views considerably.

You should be able to look at your website's server logs if you're self-hosted, or if you have Google Analytics or Adobe Analytics type embedded in your platform to see correlations with countries, ip addresses and reported screen resolutions and devices (typically low/mobile identifying) to determine the source types.
