Subscription to a media gallery doesn't provide notifications when an item is updated, only for new items--is that really true?

That is correct - the current functionality allows users to subscribe to a whole gallery application (will get notified when a new file is uploaded) or a user can subscribe at the file level for comments made on the post. 

We will discuss with Verint to see if this is an option for future releases. If this gap is detrimental to your site, we may be able to do a customization if you are interested.  

Thanks for the info! That's surprising. I'll try to figure out a workaround for some key resources that are regularly updated (downloadable visual extension files for BI tools)--the developer was hoping that users could get notifications when she had made updates to these files. I may suggest that she upload new files each time so users can get notifications--the downside is that these files are linked in various places so there will be some link upkeep in that case. But we'll figure it out. Thank you for asking if this is an option for future releases. I know the API includes this information and we get posts to related Slack channels when files are added OR updated. Again, thanks for the quick response.

Sherri Vance Could you/the developer post a comment every time there's an update on the file? If users are subscribed to the file, they'll see a comment update: https://community.telligent.com/community/11/w/user-documentation/71766/when-do-notifications-go-to-subscribers#GalleryComment 

That's exactly what we decided to do, and I'm creating a little tip video on how to turn on comment notifications and will link it in the description of the few files that the developer is really interested in people downloading new versions of when she updates. Thanks!

Sherri Vance In addition to the video, you can also use the widget headers to be more prescriptive. For example, use the Media Gallery Links widget with only the Subscribe button displayed and make your widget header something like "Click here to receive updates on this file". Here's an example (This is a wiki page, but the two orange buttons on the right get the point across):
