I just tested this out as a group owner on my sandbox site, and it allowed me to delete the sub group. If yours is not allowing you for some reason, then feel free to post the message you get so we can take a look, or feel free to open a support ticket.
Bringing the instructions in this reply to save you a click: To delete a group, navigate to the group you want to delete, click on the pencil in the top of your screen, then click Manage > Manage Group > Group Options, scroll to the bottom of the Group Options panel, and click Delete
