Is there an IncludeFields option for the widget or in-process API?

Hi all, 
 I know that the REST API has an " IncludeFields" option to limit the fields that get returned, but is there some equivalent for the Widget API or Plugin API? 
 I don't have a specific problem that I am trying to solve, just looking for ways to further improve the performance of my apps.

There isn't an "IncludeFields" option for the other APIs. We do lazy load many of the child entities and properties, so they are not loaded unless requested. For example when retrieiving a forum thread, the Author record is not loaded until the code requests that property.
