Mismatched user avatars in inbox

A few questions to better investigate the issue:

1. What version of Community are you using?
2. Do you have any UI or widget customizations?
3. Looks like that might be a mobile device, is this behavior also happening on desktop/other machines?
4. Is this behavior happening for a single user or all users?
5. Are there any exceptions in the log, or javascript errors on the page?

UPDATE: After investigation, the avatar shown is the user who most recently sent a message in the converstion. So this is working as expected.

We came to the same conclusion that this is expected behaviour.

I've logged this for review. For now, it's possible to modify this in the widget within Widget Studio.

Thank you for your follow-up.  Our team did find this feature confusing and at first glance I thought I was looking at broken data.  However, we did determine that this wasn't broken data and that the feature was working as designed (similar to Steven's findings).  So this definitely isn't a bug, and we know we can modify via the Theme and Widget Studio so if need-be we will leverage that.
