Auto-Locking Threads: What thresholds do folks use/does this work retroactively?

We are looking at turning on the auto-lock feature in our community as we sometimes run into several-year-old conversations getting brought back up, which can make a negative discussion look artificially worse than it is.

I was curious what number of days some other communities are using just to get an idea of what is common. We are in the early stages of looking into this so we are still discussing what makes the most sense for us.

Also, I wasn't sure if this would automatically look at all existing threads that are beyond that threshold and lock them. If not, is there a way to make this happen?

  • I'm not using this feature yet, but it's something I've been interested in considering. For me, we're a software company and have cloud and self-hosted options for our customers (like Verint Community). Our cloud customers are basically kept up-to-date automatically within a few weeks of a release, if not immediately. Our self-hosted versions have a ~2-year "End of Support" date, so, if I were to enable this, I would probably shoot for 24 (maybe 30) months until being locked.

This would be different if we were either 100% cloud or a hardware company (echoing Patrick's comment "...that is going to depend on your business requirements in regards to how long a thread should go unanswered before it's considered stale or abandoned.")
