How can users decide for themselves if they want the daily or weekly digest or the ‘immediate’ notification?

How can users decide for themselves if they want the daily or weekly digest or the &lsquo;immediate&rsquo; notification? 
 Once I enable the email digest in Admin > Site > Email options, the option to receive immediate notifications of new forum posts or new blog posts seem to disappear. 
 Before (without daily/weekly digest, with the widget) 
 
 After (no option to optin for notifications, only for daily or weekly digest or none at all).

Hello Irene van der Zanden , Notifications and Digests are managed separately and members can elect to get one, both, or none. I believe the first image is the Forums - Links widget which offers members the option to subscribe to receive Forum Notifications. The second image is generated by the Group - Links widget when members select the option to subscribe to the Daily or Weekly Digest. Digests are only available at the Group Level, while Notifications are subscribed to at the Application Level.
