Comment content in @group mention

Wondering if it's possible to have the Group Mention or Mention notification include the content body of the mention. Here's the use case:

We post a blog article. Two weeks later, we want to draw more attention to that article so we @mention the group in order to reach all members. We do it like this, "Hey @GROUP, please remember to check out this important post about puppies!" We want the notification that goes out to include the content of that comment. As it stands, the group members will only see the content NAME and the AUTHOR. They won't see the content itself.

I tried to change this in Admin/Notifications, but couldn't find the comment: body from the list of tokens. Is there a way to do this?

  • Morning ! Hope you had a great weekend!

Are you asking specifically about email notifications or notifications in general? I don't have email set up on my v11 sandbox, so will try to test this another way if that's what you're after.

Here is what showed in the lightning notification:

Admin at mentioned the group in that specific blog post.

This does become a bit more transparent on v12 with content mentions added, you could do something like "Hey @GROUP, please remember to check out this important post @about puppies!" and the post itself would be mentioned along with the group notification.

    Hi Grant,

I guess I was speaking about email notifications (since that's what most of our group members will opt for). I just want to content of the comment to make it in that email. Am I understanding correctly that this will happen automatically with v12?

  • I'm guessing the above screenshot in v11 means the email notification will include the blog post since the lightning notification does, but I just need some help to test that piece. Unless you're saying you tested it out and the email does not include it, which then I would ask if your lightning notification looks like mine.

In v12, you just have more options to be able to explicitly mention the blog post itself versus just the group and then hoping the application/post you're on is included. I will be able to test the email piece on v12 shortly and let you know if the email includes the post.

  • Ok can confirm for v12, which I *think* will be the same as v11.

Here is me just at mentioning the group on the blog post itself:

Here is the email my non-admin test account received:

Yes, I've tested it and it matches what you're showing me here. The conclusion that I'm reaching is that there's no way to include the comment content itself. Instead, the notification just says WHICH GROUP was mentioned in WHAT COMMENT by WHAT AUTHOR. But you can't make it say AND THIS IS WHAT THE COMMENT SAID. So, if I comment on a blog like this:

    a. @mention group: Check out this post!

    b. @mention group.

Both a and b will send the exact same notification. Correct?

  • Ah ok, now I follow and see what you're after. Clearly still in weekend mode over here...

I do not know for sure if there is a way to include the comment content itself, so will need to have one of our tech friends help me out there (/wave  ).

Your understanding of how it is out of the box appears to be correct.

    That comment still shows as:

So yes you're on the right path to ask if something could be changed in the email notification template.

Yes, you can change the notification content in Administration > Notifications > Notifications > Group Mention > Templates > Email - Body. Note that this would be for any mention of the group - blog post, forum, etc - not just comments. But you can get started editing the notification by going to Insert > Token and selecting Content: Body.

Content: Body - that's what I was looking for! I was looking for the Comment: Body token since that is what is used in the Blog Post Comment notification.

So one last question: if I at mention a group in a blog comment, who will get a notification, and how many will they receive?

    1. Everyone in that @ mentioned group will get one.

    2. Will those who are already following that individual post get another?

    3. How about those who are subscribed to the entire blog?  (All of our group members are automatically subscribed to our group blog).
