Forum Thread List widget: Adding sortability

Question

We'd like users to be able to sort by a few more factors when they view the Forum Thread List widget. We'd like to add in the ability to sort by: 
 1. Post date. (Not date of most recent activity, but date of original post) 
 2. Locked/not locked status. 
 Is it possible to add those variables to the widget, and if so, how?

1. This should already be present the option in the dropdown is called "By Thread Date", this is available in 12.0 and later. The thread Grant mentioned has the code to add this to 11.x 
 2. Locked/Unlocked is not a filter that is available with listing forum threads from the API. Adding that filter would be very difficult without the API supporting that option.
