Change location of a subgroup?

I want to confirm my understanding on sub groups:

Let's say I want to create a subgroup. For now, I just want it to be a subgroup under our site root. I'm making this private unlisted. It's just a place for Admins to record info about the community. Easy.

Later on, I start creating more subgroups--for our customers, for groups of employees. So I a create a new subgroup in our site root called "GROUPS" and start to create subgroups underneath that: Customers, Employees, etc.

So now I want to move the Admin subgroup to live not under the Site Root anymore, but under the GROUPS subgroup that I just created.

It's my understanding that this is an easy change. I just go to Group Options and change the parent. Am I right on this? Or is it more complicated?

At its core, this question is really about how easy or not easy it is to change the basic architecture/navigation of our site. I wanted to ask now before I start adding subgroups willy nilly.

Thanks!

  • I'm pretty sure your understanding is correct, but that will also change the URL of the subgroup, so if you have any static links to it, make sure you account for those. I think content within will be affected too since the URLs of (for example) a forum in that group would currently be {site_url}/group_name/f/forum_name/number/subject, but after you move it, it'll be {site_url}/group_name/subgroup_name/f/forum_name/number/subject

I'm not sure if there is any automatic redirecting that would happen, but something to watch out for overall. Hopefully, someone else can give some additional context too!

There is some built-in redirection that would be added on a change like this, although we always recommend you update any known hard-coded links, there are still things like SEO and user bookmarks to consider, so Community automatically adds permanent redirect logic to aid in those transitions. The move should be seamless for anyone doing direct/search navigation like that.
