I suppose there was not a default way to find the device screen size on velocity, but you can do it on the javascript. The idea is to create a VM bypassing parameters of the device and on the VM you can perform the api by specifying the pagesize .

Velocity is a server side technology so client specific rules are not necessarily appropriate.  The best approach if you are rendering html is to use specific class styles or other styling rules that are then targeted by CSS media queries in your theme or widget specifically.
