Looking for a way to embed a call-to-action button within a discussion, post, wiki, or event page. Has anyone successfully been able to do this?

We do this all the time by uploading an image and inserting a link. Here's one from a button set I was working on this morning as an example.
I like the graphic approach since it allows us to really mix it up with different fonts, sizes, alignment, background images, shapes, and more. I'm sure you probably have access to a designer, but if not, Canva (free online tool) has worked excellent for creating button sets.
