This terminology guide defines all the common words and phrases we use throughout our applications and documentation.

Active Directory (AD)
Active Directory (Windows Authentication extension) is a Microsoft product that stores information about users and uses this information for security, authentication, and Microsoft Exchange email support.
Administrator
Users who are responsible for how a community is configured and managed. The administrator is usually the site owner as well; however, on large sites, the site owner or owners may delegate this task or portions of it to other users. We recommend that you have only one or two administrators.
Announcements
An announcement is a specially marked post that is highlighted on your site.
Anonymous users
Anonymous Users are visitors to the site but they either are not logged in or have not registered. They usually have read-only access to the site, but this ultimately depends upon how the administrator has configured the community.
Applications
In communities built on Telligent Evolution, the term "applications" is used to define content applications, including forums, blogs, wikis, and file galleries.
Avatar
An avatar is a graphical representation of the user or a group. This can be a photo or any graphic image. The administrator can disable this functionality.
Blog
Blog is a contraction of the term "weblog." A blog is an area of the site that is usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as video.
Blogroll
A blogroll is a list of links to other sites that displays in the sidebars of your posts.
Comments
Comments are user responses to your blogs. You can enable or disable the comment functionality.
Control Panel
Telligent Evolution provides a single area that contains all of the controls used to administer the site. This area is the Control Panel.
Conversation
A conversation is a group of message exchanges between two or more users on a site.
Emoticons
Emoticons are images, such as smileys, which users can include in their Web content.
Evolution Search
Evolution Search extends and enhances the Telligent Evolution application's search capabilities. It runs in the Tasks service and creates an actual physical index file on the Web server.
EULA
An acronym for End User License Agreement. The Telligent Evolution application supports a EULA option for configuring a Web site.
Favorite
When you find a forum discussion, post, or media file that you really like, Telligent Evolution allows you to identify it as a favorite.
Flash
Flash is a file viewer supported in the Telligent Evolution application.
Forum
A forum is a portion of a community where users can post items to the site and then discuss the item in a conversational manner. A forum consists of threads created by users.
Friends
Telligent Evolution supports the notion of friends. Friends are an invitation only method of identifying and associating with other community members.
Group
A group is a collection of members that exist inside the broader community. Groups may have group specific forums, blogs, etc. Groups may be private or public.
Internet Information Services (IIS)
When you open a Web browser and navigate to a site hosted on Microsoft IIS, this is the service the browser communicates with. Telligent Evolution runs as an application within IIS.
License
The commercial versions Telligent Evolution require that you purchase a license for the software. The license comes in the format of an XML file or an alphanumeric code that must be entered in the Control Panel.
Mail Gateway
The Mail Gateway manages the queuing and sending of all emails from and to the Telligent Evolution application.
Media
Media, from a Telligent Evolution standpoint, generally refers to any type of media posted to the community. Media could be graphics, video, documents, and any other form of media that might get posted in a media gallery or embedded/attached to a post.
Mirroring
Content mirroring allows a blog to consume one or more external RSS sources. brings in any external (or internal) content as the starting point for sharing information.
Moderation
Moderation is the practice of reviewing site content and determining if it is valuable and/or acceptable on the site. Moderation is commonly done in forums but can also apply to other content inside a community.
Net framework (ASP.NET)
The application framework technology that provides Telligent engineers with a framework to support the Telligent Evolution application runtime requirements.
Override files
Override files allow you to modify any aspect of a communityserver.config or siteurls.config file without modifying the original .config file that ships with Telligent Evolution. The main benefit of using override files to make changes to the core configuration files is that you are not actually modifying the core configuration files.
Permissions
Privileges given to users within specific contexts of Telligent Evolution and the Web site. Privileges vary from user to user based on their roles as assigned by the administrator.
Posts
A post is a contribution of content. This can be a reply in a forum or an entry in a blog.
REST API
Rest API is the Telligent Evolution platform's Web services layer. All requests to the REST API go through the same pipeline as the Telligent Evolution platform, so when it is enabled the server load may be increased depending on the number of users and software tools that are accessing it.
RSS (rich site summary)
RSS delivers lists of content, which is often updated and changing, from across the Web. Telligent Evolution allows users to subscribe to RSS feeds so your Web site is updated when the associated Web site is updated. Users can subscribe to external feeds or feeds within the community, such as forums, posts, and information from the public profiles of community friends. (RSS is also known as Really Simple Syndication.)
Shared membership
Shared membership means that users share membership across multiple sites. In other words, single sign on or one login for many sites.
SharePoint
Microsort Office SharePoint Server integrates with Telligent Evolution to synchronize documents, blogs, and wikis.
Silverlight
Silverlight is a file viewer supported in Telligent Evolution.
Single sign-on (SSO)
A form of system security in which a user has access to system components without being prompted to log into each system individually. The Telligent Evolution application supports single sign-on modules with cookie authentication extension, Forms authentication extension, and Windows Authentication.
Site activity or activity feed
Telligent Evolution provides a real time list of activity that displays actions taken by users in the community. The list is referred to as the site activity or the activity feed.
Snippet
Snippets allow you to create links in your blog posts and pages using replacement text. For example, you may often refer to a particular resource on the Internet in your blog posts. Rather than typing the resource's URL each time you want to use it, you can create a snippet instead and have Telligent Evolution automatically replace the text
Social streams
Messaging between individuals within the Web community.
SQL Server
SQL Server is a database system that stores and retrieves the data entered into Telligent Evolution.
Tags
A tag is a keyword or term associated with a post which provides a link to related information.
Theme
A theme is a collection of files that determine what the Telligent Evolution site will look like visually. Themes are made up of ASP.NET user controls, ASP.NET pages, Javascript files, HTML files, Cascading Style Sheet files, as well as other types of files. Administrators can control certain aspects of the site theme via the Control Panel.
Thread
A thread is a collection of posts. The first post is the thread starter. When related responses are posted, a thread is created.
Trackbacks
Trackbacks allow administrators to track users who are linking to articles in the Web site. Administrators can enable trackback functionality in Telligent Evolution.
User name
The user name is a user's identifier for logging in to the community and visible identifier within the community.
User profile
All registered users have a unique collection of settings which they can customize. These settings are the user's profile. They allow the user to set site options, signature and bio information, avatar, email information, and so on.
Users
Users are visitors to the site who have joined the site via the registration process. Users are typically allowed a greater level of participation within the community than anonymous users and have permission to customize their profile.
Web farm
A Web farm is a cluster of Web servers within a system. Telligent Evolution can be deployed in a Web farm environment.
Widget
Widgets are configurable data that administrators and users can embed in themes and Web pages.
Wiki
A wiki is a set of pages designed such that community members can create, modify, and generally collaborate on page content.
