New user experience

• Welcome message for an invitation-only community

The new user experience is concerned with how the member is welcomed, whom he/she automatically has as friends, their moderation level, etc. The settings below become effective once the user has been accepted or has registered. For the experience a user has while registering, see Registration settings.

Configure new default friendships and moderation settings

To configure the default friend(s) every new user has, as well as their moderation level:

1. Mouse over Management.
2. Click Administration.
3. Navigate to Membership > Membership options > New user experience.
4. Specify or select options for the following settings:
1. Default new friends - This is a friend every new user will have, shown on his/her Friends tab. Specifying this friend is a good way to connect new users with other helpful members (for example, the community manager).
2. New user moderation level - Unless you want to keep all site content unmoderated, we recommend that you leave New User moderation level set to "User is moderated." If you change this setting to "User is not moderated," it will override application settings. For example, it will override a blog setting that imposes moderation. With this "not moderated," setting, any new user can post content without having it approved
3. Deliver welcome message - If you select yes, Telligent Community Server sends a welcome conversation message to each new community member.
4. Welcome message from - You can start typing the user (such as admin) from whom you want the welcome message sent.
5. Welcome message subject - Type the desired message subject here.
6. Welcome message body - Customize the welcome message body here. Note that Community Server provides 3 variables you can incorporate into the welcome message:
1. {0} is replaced with the user's display name.
2. {1} links to the user's edit page.
3. {2} links to the profile.
• Click Save.

Configure new user message, conversation, and email settings

There are four messaging options for new users:

• Welcome message sent to a new user upon joining the site
• Welcome email sent when a new user joins the site
• Welcome message that appears after a new user joins the site (Forms Authentication only)
• For invitation only sites (a.k.a. members-only sites) - special default welcome page

Customize the welcome message from the community

1. Configure the following settings:
1. Deliver welcome message - If you select yes, Telligent Community Server sends a welcome conversation message to each new community member.
2. Welcome message from - You can select the user (such as admin) from whom you want the welcome message sent.
3. Welcome message subject - You can customize the welcome message subject line here.
4. Welcome message body - You can customize the welcome message body here. Note that we provide three variables that can be incorporated into the welcome message:
• {0} = User's display name.
• {1} = Link to the new member's profile edit page.
• {2} = Link to the new member's public profile page.

2. Click Save.

Customize the welcome email text

The welcome email is sent to a user upon his/her acceptance as a member of the community. The text can be changed in the User Account Created email template.

Customize the message displayed after user joins the site

The message displayed after the user joins is changed in two parts:

• First, change message ID 24 in this file: ~/languages/<your language>/messages.xml
<message id="24">

Welcome!

Your account has been created and you are signed in. Congratulations! <br/><br/>You’re now ready to meet like-minded community members and start participating in valuable conversations.

</message>
• Second, change the message in ~/languages/<your language>/Resources.xml under CreateNewAccount_NewUserMessage:
<resource name = "CreateNewAccount_NewUserMessage">{0} While browsing the community, don’t forget to visit your {1}, which you can customize to include the information that is most important to you. Be sure to {2} to introduce yourself to the community.<br/><br/>Happy connecting!</resource>

Welcome message for an invitation-only community

For invitation-only ("members-only") sites, you can set a special default login page for members. See Make Welcome the default login page for members.
