Replying to the post via email creating a new thread

I've got a test setup running on 11.1.7 and I successfully sent a reply to a thread email and had it created as a reply on the site.

Can I ask more about your scenario? Are you replying to an email sent from the site? Are you replying as the same user?

For further investigation, could you do the following:

• Turn on message header logging in Administration > Site > Email Options in the Mail Gateway General configuration section.
• Attempt your scenario again: send a test email to the site, attempt to send a test reply email but it gets created as a new thread.
• View the event log for email related events with message headers, collect and include them here
• Save the emails from Community (the "new thread created" ones) and include them here.

I'll also throw in a note here that we highly recommend you upgrade to a newer version.

Steven Heffner sorry for slow reply ... been hectic. In answer to your questions, I (and others) are replying to an email sent from the site, as the same logged in user as the email was sent to. It just creates a new thread for each reply. 

I have turned on message header logging. 

WRT to the event log, the only way to find an event amongst many items is by type (warning, info, error, debug). Am i in the right place, because it might b hard to find an email item without being able to select 'email events'. 

I'll have a go.

I sent original post from test account A. Received an email alert below to account B (also member of the group) but not to account A.

I replied to the above email using account B.  as below

I DID NOT get a notification of this post to either Account A or B. But it did post it as a new thread (see below). Very frustrating. I am annoying lots of people with all this!

I'm continuing to investigate based on your replies. What's your mailing list setup for the forum in question?

• Administration > Site > Email Options > Incoming Mail Accounts > [pick your mailing list] > Edit, what information is there?
• While on forum page... Manage > Manage Forum > Mailing List Options, what information is there?

For site email options, incoming mail accounts, there is a server (gmail one), a username and a tick for enabled. It works, because we can start new threads, and reply to old threads (albeit in the wrong place)

Based on the event log message noting that "No mailing lists found for Message-ID <...@mail.gmail.com>", there is something that is not connecting between the mail server and Community. The To address of the incoming email is not being recognized as a mailing list on Community.

If you click Edit next to that gmail Incoming Mail Account, what is the username and Mailbox type? In order to properly route mailing lists, Email Domain and the mail account domain it needs to match either a catchall set up on the email server, or have specific mailing list addresses added that match what's in use on your forums. See this documentation for more details:  How do I configure email integration? under "Register incoming mail accounts".  

And what is the Email Domain configured near the top of the Email Options page? This should also match your configured mailing list addresses domain.

 Steven Heffner  that's interesting because I thought I'd followed those instructions. 

Setup on mail gateway is Username: allmall@vetsurgeon.org and the hostname is the imap.gmail.com one that handles mail for my domain. It is a catchall mailbox. BUt I think what you are saying is that the hostname needs to be @vetsurgeon.org (except there isnt an imap.vetsurgeon.org) ????

The important part is the setup of the "username" ie the destination email address. Can you double check your catchall settings?

• Is the name allmall or allmail?
• Do the passwords match on the gmail and community side?
• What protocol are you using?

If everything looks as it should there, can you try setting up an individual account for the specific mailing list? Create a mailbox in your gmail host that matches the name of the mailing address for the forum, and then add that host/address/pw/protocol to the list of incoming mail accounts? That would let us see if it was something problematic with the catchall mailbox setup.

The name is allmail so nothing wrong there. 

Passwords will match as I use a pwd manager! But I have double checked. 

I have set the IMAP as enabled on GMail. POP is disabled.

IN telligent, it offers two version of IMAP. Plain 'IMAP' and 'IMAP SSL' I assumed it should be the latter (https://developers.google.com/gmail/imap/imap-smtp#:~:text=Incoming%20connections%20to%20the%20IMAP,gmail.com%20%2C%20requires%20TLS.)

So I think that is all as it should be.

I don't think I understand your next instruction. Just wish this wasn't so damned complicated.  I've done what the instructions say. It should work!

what do you mean by set up an individual account for the specific mailing list. An account where? Actually, I dont understand the rest of your instruction either. A mailbox that matches the mailing address of the forum? What? Tears hair out.

BTW, i have the catchall set up in google  as follows:

And when I email allmail@vetsurgeon.org or anyoldrubbsh@vetsurgeon.org they both arrive safely in the gmail box. So that part is working apparently. 

And now they have both vanished which makes me think telligent must have picked them up, because I havent deleted them. 

I'm not familiar with the google domain email management system, but I assume you can create new addresses there? Can you create a new address that matches the name of your forum mailing list: [forum.name]@vetsurgeon.org. Then add that account under Admin > Site > Email Options > Incoming Mail Accounts with the same host/protocol as the catchall, just with the new name and pw. If something is going wrong with the routing of the catchall mailbox, setting up a specific mailing list address could work around that and shed light on what the issue might be.

dear oh dear. Nope. Not that either. Just set up a new account and replied to a forum thread, and once again, it created a new thread. Looking at the event thing it just says the email was processed. I am pissing lots of people off testing this thing. On the verge of giving up, and just accepting that it has some sort of bug, and telling that group to go and find a home elsewhere. Like facebook, where everyone has gone these days!
