How Do You Help Users with Email Subscriptions?

Hi all -

Usability is the name of our game right now and I'm working on alert settings...needless to say, the advil is close by. We are using Telligent 9.0 and have digests, subscriptions, and notifications (alerts) enabled. The set-up has the user navigating to three different tabs in order to fully customize their experience. I fear we will lose the user with this many steps, but am having trouble finding some examples of how other sites have dealt with the site architecture constraints.

Do any of you have examples of how you have managed, or messaged the email/in-system alerts for your users?
