Getting an exception/error when a user clicks on a link from a notification email about a new conversation and the user is not logged in. We're using the Sitecore SSO plugin for authentication and on version 9.0

What are you referring to when you say SSO plugin for Sitecore? We do not ship a specific SSO plugin for Sitecore, only, Cookies/Forms/Windows.There also should have been something in the exception report for this
Also note there is already a known issue here that was corrected in 10...but its not related to SSO, I still need to understand what you are actually using for that.
Looks like we're using the Cookie Authentication Single-Sign-On Client plugin
So when you say logged in...are you saying you logged in to Sitecore and the CSUSer(or whatever you named the cookie) is present? And are you sure the conversation in question the user has access to?The bug above happens if the user does not have access to the conversation in question (or they are not logged in)
Ok...so it is not the intended behavior to redirect them to login? The issue is the user has not been at the site for a day or more and are not authenticated. They click a link from an email notification and get this error.
