From the perspective of creating a forum thread, the setup of the forum determines what you'll see on the Create/edit post form. If the forum supports both questions and discussions, you'll see an option on the post form to specify which kind of thread you're starting.
If the forum is devoted only to Q&A, the post form won't have the option to specify the discussion post type.
Tracking a thread
In release 9.0, there is an "I have this question too" button on Q&A threads that you can select or deselect. Selecting this button causes the thread to appear in your question list (on the Profile page), and replies (including suggested or verified answers) will be marked there. By clicking the vote button (to the left of the count), you can see who else had this question.
Asking
Post a question
- Navigate to the desired forum.
- Type the question into the Ask a question field.
- Click Ask. (Alternatively, click New, then select "Ask a question in <forum>.")
Answering
Respond to a thread
- Navigate to the desired forum.
- Click the thread.
- Scroll down to the reply field and type in the reply.
- Click Reply.
Provide a suggested answer
- Navigate to the desired forum.
- Click the thread.
- Scroll down to the reply field and type in the reply.
- Select the Suggest as answer check box.
- Click Reply.
Alternatively, in release 9.0 when enough users click "Verify answer" to hit the configurable suggested answer threshold (set by a group owner or admin), the reply becomes a suggested answer.
Verifying
Verify a thread response
- Navigate to the forum thread in the thread list. (It will say "New suggested.")
- You can preview the answer by clicking Suggested answer. However to verify it, click the post.
- Click Verify answer.
Anyone can verify a suggested answer on the thread. When enough users click "Verify answer" to hit the configurable verified answer threshold (set by a group owner or admin), the reply becomes a verified answer. If the thread originator verifies the answer, it automatically becomes verified.
Reject an answer
The originator of the question can reject a verified answer.
If a user rejects the answer, the answer vote (for verified answers) is bumped down and can change from a verified answer to a suggested one (or lose its suggested status).
