There is also site settings in the email area to set up. Generally besides ensuring your community can send email on behalf the domain and can talk to the server there is not much specific.
I do recommend setting up a catch all email address for the domain on the email server, that way you do not need to configure an imap/pop account and inbox for every forum

Patrick M. When the user replies to a forum thread notification with email gateway enabled, what does the reply-to email address look like? Right now if I reply it just goes to our normai "info@" email we have configured
That means its probably not mail gateway enabled. Did you set up a mailing list in the forum options?
I did not do that yet. Just getting ready to try configure this on our QA environment. Are all the steps detailed in the docs?
