Telligent Community 8.5 introduces new gamification features (achievements and points) for reputation; business rules; activity story stream enhancements; status message enhancements; authentication enhancements; upgrade automation (theme and points); embedded content, and extensibility.
Telligent Community 8.5 introduces gamification with achievements and a revamped reputation point system - both utilizing business rules.
Achievements contribute to gamification by rewarding specific, customizable milestones - such as a member asking his first forum question, or obtaining 50 friends. The default achievement criteria are set forth in the Site Content > Achievements tab and enacted by business rules or third-party plugins. Achievements can be added, edited, or removed.
Achievement badges are shown in:
- User hover
- User's Achievements tab
- User profile
- Activity stream
Achievements replace the previous badge system. (The points associated with the badges from the membership points system are not lost in an upgrade - more on this in a moment.)

The Reputation Points system is the most flexible expression of reputation in the product yet, incorporating participation, quality, and citizenship. Points are awarded for granular, customizable tasks or conditions using the new business rules or are migrated during an upgrade. These points contribute one facet to the User Reputation Score, which also utilizes four other configurable facets to calculate a member's relative standing in the community.
Those in the top 50% of members are recognized as top members on their user profile (for the user only) and on the user hover.
For information about reputation scoring and points, please see:

Business rules help drive participation and engagement. They are the heart of Community's points system. They present many opportunities across the community for one-time changes, workflow automation, and engagement.
Using a wizard interface, business rules let you set simple "when/then" rules - such as awarding points for a published blog post, or more complex rules with "if" conditions - such as requiring that the post be liked before receiving points. One-time changes - for example, adding newly created users to a role - are easy to set up, as well, using this wizard.
Rules can be created, edited, or deleted.

The Activity Story Stream widget can be scoped to display a member's joinless and joinful group activity, as well as the previously existing site activity, group and subgroup activity, and user activity stream modes.
Status messages that might be better suited as forum threads (such as when a message and its replies become a discussion) or file gallery posts (such as when a file is added to the status message) can now be promoted to these types of posts.
When posting a status message, it's now possible to choose the group to target (or send it to the entire community) from the site home page and it's easier to choose alternative applications when authoring a post, such as a forum thread or blog post.
There is a focus on enhanced security in this release. Community includes several authentication enhancements:
- Cookie and Forms authentication administration has been moved to these methods' plugins in the Manage Plugins tab.
- Cookie authentication gains two new encryption methods, AES-HMAC-SHA256 using CBC mode, and AES-GCM.
- There is a new LDAP authentication plugin.
- It's now possible to lock down a site to only allow authenticated users.
For information about Authentication, please see:

The new polls feature uses the Embeddable Content button in the text editor to add a poll inline into any application content or in a Generic Content widget.
Our embedded content fragment API gives developers the ability to create third-party applications for embedding complex content.
After upgrading a site, admins can now use a plugin to migrate their customized site, group, and blog themes and widgets to the factory-defined Social theme.
This utility converts theme and widget customizations. So if for example, you have a 7.6 site using the Enterprise theme, you could use this tool to migrate any widget or theme customizations you've made before committing the Social theme. The tool lets you preview the theme at the blog, group, and site level.
When a prior release of Community is upgraded to Community 8.5, existing Membership Points System factors are migrated to rules, and the previously awarded points are migrated to the new reputation points system with the exception of 3 factors.
Factors that are converted include:
- Verified answer.
- Bookmarked post.
- User (Friend).
- Wiki comments.
- Wiki edits.
- New page.
The factors that are not converted are:
Please note that some point factors previously defaulted to a point value of zero. If you left the value at zero, the factor will not be migrated to a rule since no points can be awarded for it.
You can, however, create your own rule to award points for these actions as well as for many more.
The subscriptions that are utilized for blogs, forums, media galleries, and wikis have been migrated to the new subscription service.
New extensibility enhancements and additions include the following:
- Rules engine triggers.
- Point transactions, percentile API.
- Determining and storing recent applications/groups (for activity stories), content conversion service.
- Rich embedded content fragments.
- Cookies, LDAP, Forms, And Windows authentication.
- Versioned content fragments (for theme migration).
- Subscription service.
- With version 188.8.131.52055, API calls to List Activity Stories now allow the sort option CreatedDate.
APIs can be defined via plugins and accessed via name and version.
