Behaviour such as this on a Community, especially a public facing one, can even be a source of contention and misery for members, that results in drama that affects member use in the Community. Also known as "griefing". We've had members start arguments with other members because someone's comment was upvoted/downvoted/self voted on and that affects a perceived level of importance or disagreement. From an engagement and participation perspective this is an important area to control and is part of what I'd consider "community 101". Even Reddit has this as a controllable limitation.

Forum Post: RE: Easy way to remove users from a Group/Forum?

Hi emmosophos Out of the box, there isn’t a built-in way to bulk remove members from a group or forum once they’ve been added via a site role like “Registered Users.” The only native way to remove those users would be to remove the site role itself—but doing so could unintentionally impact their access and permissions elsewhere in the community if that role is used across multiple groups. In our experience, organizations that need to manage membership at scale (either adding or removing users in bulk) typically rely on a custom solution. We’ve developed scripts that allow for bulk updates to group membership, either based on a defined list of users or by leveraging site roles. As a best practice going forward, we recommend creating a dedicated site role for each group—for example, “GroupName Members”—rather than using “Registered Users.” This approach allows you to manage membership more precisely, since users can be added or removed from the group simply by assigning or removing that specific role, without affecting broader community access. For your current situation, there isn’t a native bulk removal option available, so cleanup would need to be done manually or through a custom script to streamline the process. Hope this helps—happy to discuss the scripting option further if that would be useful.

Forum Post: Easy way to remove users from a Group/Forum?

Hello, For some of our forums, we assign the role “Registered Users” so that all users with a community account are automatically added to the group/forum. However, we have noticed that when this role is removed, the users are not removed, and the Members list remains populated with all community members. Is there a way to remove all members from a group/forum without having to go through each one individually? Stanton This is a tricky one, and unfortunately, from what I’ve seen, there isn’t a clean out-of-the-box way to govern this behavior. Permissions around voting vary by content type. For example, in forums, there is a permission that allows users to rate replies/comments—but it’s an all-or-nothing setting. If you disable it, then no one can vote at all (unless you grant that ability through a specific role or admin-level permission). That makes it difficult to target just self-upvoting behavior without impacting everyone. Additionally, some applications don’t even offer the same level of control over voting permissions, so consistency across content types can be limited. Outside of that, I haven’t seen any native option to prevent users from upvoting their own content or to silently remove votes without leaving some kind of trace.

Forum Post: How do you prevent a user from up-voting their own comment?

It's a forum thread, or maybe it's a blog post, or some other comment. You have discussions going back and forth, and usually your members are sensible, they upvote what's useful, that gets highlighted at the top of the whole thread. All is well. Sometimes, though, the conversation doesn't really have anything worth highlighting, and so your members don't upvote anything. Except that one person, who feels their comment is the most important, and so upvotes their own, so that it's highlighted at the top of the thread, forcing you to monitor and go in and downvote it so that it's demoted. But that also leaves an audit trail, invites discussion and disgreement, "why did you downvote me?". I would rather silently remove up or downvotes, but more importantly, prevent someone from upvoting themselves. How can this be governed?

Forum Post: RE: What's the intended behaviour for permissions and changing of group type?

[quote userid="281552" url="~/community/12/f/ask-the-community/1152444/what-s-the-intended-behaviour-for-permissions-and-changing-of-group-type/1623338"] A follow-up question: are you solely using site roles to permission users, or do you also have those site roles applied as Members , Managers , or Owners ? Stanton It does sound like you may have run into a platform bug. Normally, when you switch a group back from Public (Open Membership) to Private (Unlisted) , the permissions should reset according to the default template, and “read group” access for roles like Everyone or Registered Users should be removed unless explicitly granted. A follow-up question: are you solely using site roles to permission users, or do you also have those site roles applied as Members , Managers , or Owners ? There are separate settings for membership type in the same area of the admin panel, and these can sometimes override or interact with the site role permissions in unexpected ways. Since the permissions aren’t updating as expected, I would recommend opening a ticket with Verint Support. They can confirm whether this is a known issue in version 12.1.9.35025 and advise on any workarounds or patches. In the meantime, you may need to manually adjust the permissions for those roles to ensure the group is fully private.

Forum Post: RE: Exporting and Importing themes is powerful

Christopher G. Stanton Love this callout—completely agree this functionality doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. Being able to export/import themes across environments is such a huge win, especially when you’re managing dev → staging → prod workflows. It really takes a lot of the manual rework (and risk of inconsistencies) out of the process. Also great point from Lennert Fransen on Default Group Themes—that’s another one that can save a ton of time when set up thoughtfully. Between reusable themes and default configurations, you can get to a much more scalable and governed approach to managing the community experience. The idea of enabling more designer-focused or non-admin roles to stage and submit theme changes for approval is really interesting too. That kind of workflow would make collaboration a lot smoother and help teams move faster while still maintaining oversight. Appreciate you sharing this—definitely one of those features that once you start using it, you don’t want to go back

Forum Post: RE: Is there a way to create Article Categories with REST or Velocity API?

See Create Category REST Endpoint . With Articles you create an Article Version. So the first version of the Article is essentially creating the Article. If you look at the API page that Patrick linked to, you will see that there are two different forms of the endpoint. You want to use the second one, which doesn't require an existing Article ID.

Forum Post: RE: Articles API issues - No Create and Metadata not saving

Am I correct in stating that you cannot create new Article's with the REST API?

Forum Post: Is there a way to create Article Categories with REST or Velocity API?

Is there a way to create Article Categories with REST or Velocity API? Stanton Another great feature, which probably not many Verint Community platform users know about, is " Default group themes" . For every “type” of page, like the group homepage, the forum thread page, blog post page, etc., you can create default themes. If you set that up right and configure it properly for every type of page, then for every new group you create you don’t have to drag and drop widgets on pages, change widget spacing, widget titles, imagery, page layouts, and so on. If at some point you want to change the design or layout of all your groups (that follow the default group theme), you can just update the default group theme and all your groups will follow the new layout/design/style. So that can also be a huge time saver!

Forum Post: Exporting and Importing themes is powerful

This isn't a question, more a "This is really nice" comment. Editing custom pages (and frankly other 'themes' in verint, but in this case I'm editing a custom page) can be a time consuming process. You add widgets, such as the generic content widget, you customise blog lists, and you upload images and embed-able items. In our case we have different environments, one we use for development, then staging and then production, and while 'out of the box' there's no push-button to migrate content from one environment to another, being able to export a theme makes life easier in this regard. I was able to setup the custom page to look how I wanted, and then export the theme from our staging environment, load up the production environment, and import the theme. Immaculate, everything was reproduced, re-uploaded and imported properly from the xml file, every setting, and I could even preview the changes and approve them before moving to publish them. This functionality, I feel, is somewhat understated, and the ability for say a member in another role, such as a designer, to then stage or upload changes like this for approval by an administrator or another user, would be ideal. Having this functionality at all, is simply a time saver. Thank you.

Forum Post: RE: How to get the old value of user profile fields like (First_Name, Last_Name, Bio, Company etc...) after triggering "User.BeforeUpdate" Automation Event.

You'll need to do a call to core_v2_user.Get for the user & check the data it returns... that's the old data before the update is applied.

Forum Post: Is anyone using Keycloak for external (social) authentication?

We're looking at potentially using Social Sign On with our community, and are looking at the best way to go about this. One option is to use Keycloak to manage all the external providers. This gives you a wider variety than are built into Verint, and you configure them all within Keycloak without needing to touch Verint after the initial setup. It also centralises authentication logic, handles account linking, attribute mapping, and token management. However, the main downside is having to provision & maintain a Keycloak server, as well as having to create a plugin for a custom external provider.
