Filter Search Results by ContentType via Rest API

Question

I'm using the Rest API to pull search results from the Community, and noticed that the results come back with a lot of the replies to forums when searching. I can't find documentation of how to define the "Filters" part of the API Request to filter by Content Type. 
 1. What is the format for Filters parameter in Search API? 
 2. Is there a way to filter by ContentType or is there a way to collapse the Replies to their main object?

Through looking through various other threads related to Search, it seems this works for my purpose. Itd be great if this was outlined somewhere in the documentation (why is it type vs ContentType etc).
