Create a "Follow" button for Group/Page using URL parameters?

Question

I'd like to create a "Follow" button for each of the Groups, and Pages in our community so users can click a button and be instantly subscribed to notifications for that space. I noticed in this Telligent "Ask the Community" forum that there's a "Turn Forum notifications on" button which subscribes a user to this forum. Is there a way to use URL parameters behind a custom button, that would subscribe users to a Group or Page?

Sure, this could be accomplished with a custom widget which presents a button that calls a widget-defined callback that iterates applications and subscribes the user via the Widget API. It could also be done purely on the client-side via the REST API with JavaScript, but depending on the number of groups, applications, it may be more efficient to do it server-side. 
 In particular, you'd be interested in the subscriptions API.
